Elphick is fluent in four Philippine languages. She has devoted much of her
career to cross-cultural communication and the adaptation of immigrants to
US culture. She has developed curricula integrating English language,
citizenship, lifeskills, and employability skills for ESL students that are now
widely used throughout Connecticut. She has also developed hands-on
instructional kits for use by ESL and early childhood teachers. In
recognition of her educational achievements the Connecticut Association of
Adult and Continuing Education honored her as Connecticut Educator of
the Year (1993) and the Secretary of the State named her an Outstanding
Immigrant (1999).

Throughout her career Elphick has been active in fostering and teaching
Philippine dance, for which the Filipino Heritage Committee honored her as
Outstanding Filipino American in the Performing Arts (2001). In August
2008 she was given an award as Outstanding Silliman Alumna by Silliman
University in the Philippines.

Leonard Newell
(Chief Linguistic Advisor, deceased)
BA, Seattle Pacific University; MA, Yale; Ph.D, De La Salle University,
Manila. Newell held many offices in the Summer Institute of Linguistics
(SIL), including director for the Philippines, 1978-82. He is author of the
Batad Ifugao Dictionary, the Handbook of Lexicography for Philippine and
Other Languages, a dictionary of Romblomanon, a translation of the
Bible into Batad Ifugao, and scores of articles on Philippine linguistics.
His experiences as a missionary have been vividly documented in
Headhunters' Encounter with God: An Ifugao Adventure (iUniverse,
2007).. Newell died in 2008.

Rintoul (BApSc, University of British Columbia, 1982) is manager
of information technologies at the Canada Institute of Linguistics,
Langley, British Columbia. He has also worked as a software
engineer and publications manager at SIL in Bagabag, Philippines.

More about Ester T. Elphick

A native speaker of Cuyonon, Dorla is a staunch advocate
in preserving Cuyonon language and culture. She has two  Bachelor of Arts
degrees with majors in Linguistics and English Studies and a minor in
Russian Studies. In her Master of Arts in Education she specialized in
Curriculum and Instruction. As the latest member of the  CLCP team, she
brings with her, administrative and computer skills, research and teaching
experiences in English as a Second Language.
Her computer skills will enable her to learn and use software as she
navigates the various phases of the project. She is conscientious, organized,
energetic, meticulous, pleasant to work with and very enthusiastic about the
project. She is a welcome addition to the CLCP team.
